I am Tierney’s first blog post | Fight club (1999)

Film= Fight Club

Director= David Fincher

Genre= Drama, Thriller

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Overall, I enjoyed this film. It was not what I expected from the hype and advertising I had seen. My experience was dampened by knowing the twist and waiting for it to make sense throughout the whole film. Knowing he wasn’t there made it confusing to watch a film where he so obviously was there and doing things in the world. He was able to move things, do stuff while our placeholder wasn’t looking and had original ideas about things the narrator (Norton) didn’t know. That made the viewing experience frustrating for me as it didn’t feel solvable. Overall, I loved the cast and the story. This is the first thing I’ve seen Edward Norton in where I feel like he got to show his acting skill. Brad Pitt was fashionable madman. Helena Bonham carter was in her element as usual.

Tension=⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This film really knew how to build tension. There were moments I felt like I’d been holding my breath for five minutes. The more stress they experienced, the more that transferred onto myself.

Sadness=⭐️

Wasn’t a very sad film but didn’t really need/mean to be. Sad about meatloaf’s death and the reality of the people in those support groups.

Romance=⭐️⭐️

I loved the love triangle of confusion present in this film but we only really got to see the angry confusion moments. (for obvious reason but it’s the least romantic part of their relationship)

Spice=⭐️⭐️

The weird cgi sex thing was odd to watch and the concept of going to fake being ill so you can sleep at night rather than dealing what’s actually wrong with you is mad.

Humour= ⭐️⭐️

This film could be funny but I feel some attempts at humour fell quite flat. The “I am jack’s…” joke particularly made sense for the plot but got old real quick.

Ending=⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

As I said, the ending saved the whole film. I wish so much that I could have watched this film not knowing what I did. I can only imagine how much that ending would have rocked.

Cinematography=⭐️⭐️⭐️

Some weird choices going on in this film but I rather enjoyed the weirdness.

Final Thoughts:

The main character is either called Tyler or the narrator, the fact people say his name is Jack or whatever his name tag said at the start baffles me. I will die on this hill.
